PRINCE2 Foundation vs Practitioner: the short answer

These two levels are a ladder, not a choice between rivals.

• PRINCE2 Foundation (v7) teaches you the method - its principles, themes, and processes - so you understand how a PRINCE2 project is structured and can work within one. No prerequisite; great for newcomers and team members.
• PRINCE2 Practitioner (v7) proves you can apply and tailor the method to a real project. It builds on Foundation and is aimed at the people actually running projects.

If you are new, or you just need to operate inside a PRINCE2 project, take Foundation. If you run projects and need to adapt the method to them, you’ll want Practitioner - but Foundation comes first.

Who needs which?

You’re a team member, supplier, or stakeholder. Foundation is usually enough. You’ll understand the language, the roles, and how the project is governed, so you can contribute effectively - without needing the tailoring depth of Practitioner.

You’re new to project management and want a recognized qualification fast. Start at Foundation. There is no prerequisite, so you can begin immediately and finish with a credential and a structured method.

You run projects, or you’re moving into a project manager role. You’ll want Practitioner - it’s the level that proves you can take the method off the page and tailor it to a real, messy project. Remember Foundation is the prerequisite, so plan for both.

Your job description names a level. Follow it. Many PM roles ask specifically for Practitioner; many delivery and support roles only need Foundation.

Most people do both - in order

For anyone heading toward running projects, the normal path is Foundation, then Practitioner:

1. Foundation to learn the method and earn the prerequisite.
2. Practitioner to prove you can apply and tailor it.

Doing them in sequence is not duplication - Foundation gives you the knowledge, Practitioner gives you the applied credibility project leads are hired for.
