• ITIL 4 is the established version. It is widely embedded in organizations and is the version most often named in job descriptions today. If you need a qualification that employers already recognize, this is the safe pick.
• ITIL Foundation (Version 5) is the newer generation. If you want to be ahead of the curve - or your organization is moving to the latest scheme - it can be the forward-looking choice.

If you are certifying for a job hunt now, lean ITIL 4. If you are future-proofing and your market is moving, consider ITIL 5 - or do ITIL 4 now and take the bridge later.

How to choose, by situation

You’re a new learner with no ITIL certificate. If you are certifying to land or change a job soon, ITIL 4 Foundation is the lower-risk pick because it is the version most employers already recognize. If your goal is to hold the most current credential and you are not on a tight hiring timeline, ITIL 5 Foundation is worth considering.

You already hold ITIL 4. You probably do not need to redo Foundation. Look at the bridge route, which is designed to move existing ITIL 4 holders to the newer version efficiently. Confirm eligibility before booking.

You’re a team or organization standardising. Pick the version your tooling, partners, and hiring actually align to. Many teams stay on ITIL 4 until the newer version is clearly the recruiting standard, then move people across via the bridge in a planned wave.

Why not both? The bridge route

You don’t have to choose permanently. A common, low-waste path is:

1. Certify in ITIL 4 now, so you have a recognized credential immediately.
2. When your market shifts, take the bridge to the newer version instead of starting over.

The “right” version genuinely depends on what employers in your market currently ask for - and that changes. Before you commit, scan a handful of target job descriptions and check which version they name. If they say ITIL 4, certify in ITIL 4. If they have moved on, follow them.
