ITIL® Version 5 Certification Path - Foundation & Specialist Streams

Navigate the ITIL® Version 5 certification path - start at Foundation, then pick a specialist stream (Product, Service, Transformation, Experience), with a transition route for existing ITIL holders.

Your map to ITIL® Version 5

ITIL® Version 5 is organised as a path, not a single course: you establish the fundamentals, then specialise toward the work you actually do. This page is the navigational hub for that path - every Version 5 course we run, in the order most people travel them, with a one-line cue for who each stream fits.

A note on accuracy: we describe the shape of the path here as guidance. Any concrete scheme rule - strict prerequisites, exam formats, how many streams a designation needs, or how prior certs map in - is flagged with and confirmed with you directly rather than asserted, because those details belong to the scheme owner and can change.

All courses are delivered live and online, with group seats and an admin dashboard for teams.

Step 1 - Start at Foundation

Almost everyone begins with ITIL® Foundation (Version 5). It establishes the shared vocabulary and core concepts that the specialist streams build on, so later study has something to attach to. We treat Foundation-first as the sensible default rather than a universal hard gate - if you already hold ITIL, skip ahead to the transition route below and we’ll confirm what applies to you.

Step 2 - Choose a specialist stream

After Foundation, you specialise. The four streams below map to different kinds of work - you generally pick the one that matches your role rather than taking all of them. The grouping is described as guidance; exact prerequisites and what each stream counts toward are confirmed with us.

Stream / CourseWho it’s for (one line)
ITIL® Foundation (Version 5)Everyone - the shared starting point that the streams build on.
ITIL® Product (Version 5)People building and running products and platforms who own outcomes end to end.
ITIL® Service (Version 5)People focused on delivering, operating, and supporting services day to day.
ITIL® Transformation (Version 5)Change, improvement, and transformation leads driving how the organization evolves.
ITIL® Experience (Version 5)People centered on customer and user experience and the outcomes that follow from it.
ITIL® Managing Professional Transition (Version 5)Existing ITIL holders moving into the newer scheme without starting from scratch.

Step 3 (for existing holders) - the transition route

If you already hold ITIL, you typically don’t begin at Foundation. The ITIL® Managing Professional Transition (Version 5) route is designed to carry experienced practitioners into the Version 5 scheme efficiently, adding what’s changed instead of re-teaching what you know. We’re not asserting the eligibility list, what it credits toward, or the exam format - ask us and we’ll confirm the current position for your specific credential before you book.

How to use this path

  • New to ITIL? Foundation first, then one specialist stream chosen by your role.
  • Already certified? Ask us about the transition route rather than repeating the fundamentals.
  • A team? Standardise everyone on Foundation, then send each person to the stream that matches their job. You don’t need the whole team on every stream.
  • Unsure between two streams? That’s a quick conversation - we’ll map your goal to the shortest honest route.

Because we run all of this live and online with group seats, you can put a whole team on the path together, track completion in the admin dashboard, and add people as you scale.

Find your starting point

The path is simple in shape: Foundation, then a stream that fits your work - with a transition route if you already hold ITIL. We’ll confirm the current scheme specifics for your situation before you commit anything. Talk to us about the right Version 5 path, or start at ITIL® Foundation (Version 5).
